This is a Simpsons barber shaving scuttle in the traditional style. The shallow holder with drain holes at the top holds a puck of shaving soap. Through the wide spout on the side, the mug can be filled with boiling hot water from a tea kettle. The shaving brush can then be dunked into the water through the spout to heat it up before swishing it around on the soap on the top. This creates warm lather for shaving. The drain holes allow excess water to drain back into the mug and keep the hard soap from dissolving. The water will hold enough heat for a comfortable shave.

Perfect shave

I get a very close and comfortable shave using this scuttle with Taconic pre shave or Edwin Jagger pre shave. I’ve never tried the Col Conk soap. But I have used the scuttle refills you will find in the link printed in red in this article.
They are the perfect size for all of my scuttles and all deliver a super rich lather.

The brush cavity is too small. If the purpose of soaking the brush is to increase the flexibility of the bristles, it does not make sense to force a dry brush head through a small hole to soak it. It damages the bristles. This is with a 22 mm brush head.

Wow! Hot shaving soap

Filled water reservoir with hot water. Soaked a badger brush in it. Williams shave puck on top to warm puck up. Pulled brush out of water went straight to soap, instantly lathers up when face lathering. Hot lather seams to help soften whiskers making it even easier to shave. Definitely love this scuttle
